Last month I had the opportunity and privilege to be able to attend one of Brett Florens' Lighting Workshops organised by Eric from Colour Chrome. I have to say that this really was an AWESOME experience learning from one of Nikon and South Africa's TOP photographers.
I learnt so much and felt really humbled being amongst some of Durban's top photographers and had a great time networking and meeting new people in the field.
Being the youngest photographer at the workshop - to say that I felt intimidated and out numbered in years of experience was an understatement, however, by the end of the day after loads of helpful tips and tricks from Brett himself and from some of the photographers who were there, I had a new found confidence in myself and felt at home with everyone else there.
I soon realized that it made no difference the amount of experience everyone around me may have had, we were all photographers there for the same reason - to expand our knowledge and add to our portfolio but most of all to better ourselves in our industry and become better photographers for ourselves and for our clients.
- OUR FANTASTIC MODELS -
We were really spoilt with 3 very talented models from Models International who were such troopers throughout the whole day, I'm sure at times it must have felt like they were on the red carpet with all of us snapping away at them with our camera's.
Thank you Talia, Brady and Naledi for all your hard work and patience throughout the workshop, I really appreciate it and have a new found respect for models after seeing all you in action and seeing how taxing it can actually be.
- OUR LOCATION -
Nothing was spared for this workshop and our location was a special one, I would like to say thank you to Geoff Goldswain for letting us utilize your spectacular studio for the day and for welcoming us all into your lovely home.
Of course we would not have been able to have fun with light without the awesome lighting gear that was provided for us, so another special thanks goes out to Elinchrom for the great equipment.
- BEHIND THE SCENES -
Loads of fun, laughter and learning was had throughout the day and I enjoyed taking a few snaps here and there of all the goings on.
Durban's talented Kym Burmester had a go at being a model for us, Thanks Kym!
Everyone having an absolute blast throughout the day.

- MAKE UP -
All our models looked absolutely gorgeous and that was made possible by Aldytha De Silva from Make-Up Your Mind. Thank you so much for all the hard work and effort you put into always making sure the models were camera ready looking fabulous as ever.
- SOME OF MY SHOTS FROM THE DAY -
Working with models who knew what they were doing definitely helped, but from all the guidance provided from Brett - I learnt how to better communicate and direct my 'clients' better while shooting to insure that everyone feels comfortable throughout the shoot.
Eye contact is key and setting the tone before a photo shoot with all involved also plays an extremely important role.
At the get - go I sat and had a one-on-one mini teaching session with Brett which was great! Here are some of the head shots I took of him.
I then had a go at taking images of the models - here are some of my shots. I hope you enjoy them.

Once the day was over, I came home feeling inspired and excited to put my new skills into practice. Thank you Brett for ALL your advice and assistance and mentoring you did for me during the day, it was so awesome meeting you and I look forward to taking part in any courses you have in the future and hope that I can attend as many as possible whenever I can.
Thank you once again to all who were involved in making this workshop such a success!
I would highly recommend attending a workshop by Brett Florens to all photographers wanting to expand their knowledge and improve their skills in the photography industry.
